【調査・研究】research/ study/ survey/ investigation の違い【医学論文の英語表現】
統計に関しては勉強中ですが、解く方が最近中心なのであまり記事にまとめることがなくなってきまして、、引き続き英語の方を磨いていきます。
今回は「調査・研究」の意味で使われる単語research/ study/ survey/ investigation の違いを見ていきます。

単語の意味と共起表現
まずは単語の意味を見ていきます。

・study
the activity of examining a subject in detail in order to discover new information
・research
a detailed study of a subject, especially in order to discover(new) information or reach a (new) understanding
さて、まずこのstudy, researchの2つですが、この原義を見ても比較的似たような意味合いになっています。researchの意味の中に"a detailed study"とあるので、studyよりもより狭義な意味合いという感じはあるかと思います。
続いて、ちょっと意味が異なるのはsurveyですね。
・survey
an examination of opinions, behaviour, etc., made by asking people questions
the measuring and recording of the details of an area of land
日本語だと「調査」と訳されることが多いと思いますが、人にインタビューして得られた結果や土地の測量などが当てはまります。
同じ「調査」と訳されることが多い単語としてinvestigationがありますが、これもまた少し異なった意味になります。
・investigation
the act or process of examining a crime, problem, statement, etc. carefully, especially to discover the truth
crime, problem, statementなどが対象となっており、そうした問題に対しての「真実を明らかにする」ための調査という意味合いです。
それぞれのコーパスをSkeLLで見てみます。
これらの単語を主語とする動詞は以下のようで、大体重複しています。
find, show, suggest, reveal, indicate, demonstrate, confirm
investigationのみは、「真実を明らかにする」という意味合いから以下のような動詞を取ることが特徴です。
uncover, clear, disclose
またこれらの単語を目的語にする動詞は以下のものが代表的です。
conduct, undertake, perform
いずれも“行われる”という意味合いのものですね。
修飾語句についてはsurvey, investigationはresearch, studyと少し異なるものが使われます。

満足度調査、地質調査など定義に当てはまるものですね。

criminal, police, murder, FBI, scientific, arcaeological
こちらは学問的なものと公的調査が混在していることがわかります。どちらかといえば犯罪などに絡めて使われることが多いのでしょう。

医学論文を含めた用例
studyはあまりにありふれているので、researchから見てみます。
・research

researchを含むもので手持ちの論文から出てきたのは、「今後の研究に関連した基準や方法論などを検討した論文」でした。
医学論文においてstudyというと個々の研究を指しますが、幅広くその分野の研究方法について論じる時はresearchが使われている、というところでしょうか。
続いてsurveyでは以下のような論文のタイトルがヒットしました。

コーパスでもみた通りnationwideといった単語との関連は強いですね。疫学的なものを見ていく場合はsurveyがしっくりくることもあるのではないかと思います。

あまりinvestigationなんて使われることがないかと思ってましたが、記述研究の類ではどうもみられるようですね。descriptive studyのように置き換えても通用するかなと思います。
